There were no fad diets or 'secret' detox programmes that got me into what I consider the best shape of my life. I did it the old fashion way: exercising and eating right. I have always been someone who liked to exercise, but I loved my food more. And coming from a family with genetics that predisposed me to being curvier, my fitness regime was hardly enough to battle my bad diet and absolute love for food. I had an active adolescence where I was thin and fit. I gradually put on lots of weight over the years and stupidly accepted that was my destiny. After I got engaged last year I decided something needed to change, and I remember the moment when I flipped the switch in my mind and decided it was time to prove I could get the weight off. For me, I knew there was only so much I could do to motivate myself to stick to this plan and get me ready for my wedding; I needed help. And help came in the form of Steve.

I was skeptical when we started to train together as I had a short attention span, didn't like to run, and thought exercise would get boring; Steve calls this my 'princess diva attitude'. Right away he overhauled my diet and exercise plan and told me this was the only way I was going to get fit and lose the excess weight for my wedding. He measured me with a tape measure and scale which could internally analyze my body. I'll never forget when Steve told me I had a metabolic age almost 10 years older than my true age. Things had to change not only for my wedding, but for my health.

Steve and I have been working out together for over a year. In our minimum of twice weekly workouts we are always able to find compromises in what activities and exercises we do so that we are both happy. Each session is hard work, but I can honestly say we have fun. Steve even made me into a runner which I never thought was possible; I now love running. He always brings with him new torture, sorry, I mean 'equipment' that gives my body new challenges as well as keeps me interested in exercising. He essentially brings a mini gym with him wherever he goes! Steve is great at explaining what he's trying to achieve in each workout and specifically tailors what we do each session to my body type and fitness goals. He always takes the time to talk me though my workout regime when we aren't together as well as what I should be eating during the week. It would be a lie to say that I never cheat when it comes to food, but I make sure that my levels of exercise can accommodate my moments of weakness.

Another major challenge I faced when attempting to get wedding-ready is that I suffer from chronic kidney disease. There is nothing about how I look that would ever suggest I have a major medical condition which has put me in the stage right before dialysis and transplantation as I only about 15-20% kidney function left. The biggest day to day side-effect of having this disease is fatigue. When I was at my heaviest, I remember constantly feeling lethargic and sleepy, which often spiraled into feeling depressed. With this new found passion for exercise and eating right, my body did need time to adjust to the exercise. Yet I was shocked how quickly and positively my body responded. I have never been as fit as I am now, and I know this is that best I've felt since being diagnosed with my condition ten years ago.

I've had many personal trainers in my life, but I can honestly say that not one of them brought the energy, intensity, and variety that Steve brings to each and every session we have together. Only with Steve pushing me beyond what I thought I was physically capable of doing and getting me to eat right was I able to get into what I consider the best shape of my life. I've been looking at my wedding photos in disbelief of how toned and slim I look, so Steve, we did it and I can't thank you enough for your help!
